National Day 2 Show Report

8/7/2024

Thursday, July 25, 2024, I-X Center, Cleveland, Ohio

Sorry, I fell way behind on the blogs. I had hoped to blog every night at the National but I was just too exhausted after the show each night. Then I came home with COVID. Then I had to prepare for the Oak Creek show. So, I've been exhausted, sick, and busy. I'll try to catch up.

On the morning of Day 2, Dave and I somehow found the will power to leave our luxury suite and ventured over to I-Hop for breakfast. Afterwards, I plugged the I-X Center into my GPS and it took me on a totally weird route to the venue. We spent half the ride winding through a forest preserve.

I think the weird route was a result of traffic around the I-X Center and the GPS lead us through the clearest path to the venue. As we were walking in, another dealer complained that he was stuck on the highway, near the venue, for an hour before he could exit. Yikes! We heard similar stories all day long.

The first hour of the show was kind of slow which I think was a result of people having trouble exiting the highway to the venue. Around 10 a.m., the place was packed and I was busy the entire day. Sales were excellent. Once again, I beat my 2023 results for Day 2. I sold all sorts of stuff including my 1934-36 Diamond Stars Mel Ott -- I was sorry to see that one go. Another big sale was my 1962 Jello Carl Yastrzemski.

It was great to catch up with Sandy, a now retired law school professor, who I talked about the other day. Sandy also purchased some T206s. Thanks Sandy!

I enjoyed seeing Allen, a follower of this blog who lives in San Diego and who I met last year at the Chicago National. Allen purchased some cards. Thank you!

Many, many people purchased cards today. It was a frenzy most of the day. I don't even know what I sold. All I know is that there were a lot of empty spaces in my display cases.

On the buying front, a much better day. As promised, Tim returned with a stack of Exhibits. I have sold four or five exhibits so far which is kind of funny because I wasn't even sure whether I should bother putting them out. Anyway, Tim had some great ones like Joe Dimaggio, Rudy York, and Bob Feller. There were some boxing, bowling and figure skating in the group as well. Then there were some that had postcard backs. I am not sure what those are. They sort of look like Exhibits on the front. I am going to have to research those.

I also purchased a nice group of cards from John from Lansing, Michigan. John sold me a 1957 Topps Ted Williams, Sandy Koufax, Roberto Clemente, Duke Snider, a 1969 Topps Willie Mays, a 1968 Topps Hank Aaron and a 1966 Topps Sandy Koufax. Thanks John. I was really pleased with my haul today!

Again, I saw all sorts of folks I knew all day long like Dennis from Joliet, Jason Metz, then there was a guy who purchased some cards from me at the Kalamazoo show along with the dealer who was set up next to me at that show. I saw Mike from the Cleveland area, who is threatening to come out and set up in Oak Creek. Dave's brother Frank hung out with us most of the day. Frank lives in nearby Akron and is a very interesting guy.  Chris from Cincinnati was there.

I saw my main man Hockey Greg, who was drawn to my hockey display case. Then I got to meet Sammy Thunder, another vintage sports vlogger I follow on YouTube. Sammy gave me a signed custom baseball card along with a decal. Thanks Sammy!

There was one guy, who tried to hustle me on my 1955 Bowman Mickey Mantle, which draws a lot of attention because I have it priced low since it has a crease. I pointed out the crease to the guy and he complained that I had the card priced too high. Sorry buddy, I reviewed the comps, I have the card accurately priced. I really did not appreciate this guy's BS. Hustler guy was the only bump in the road today. It was an excellent day.

Dave and I capped it off with a trip to the Brown Derby steak house. I actually went with pork chops because I had so much steak last week. I saw Johnny Adams at the Brown Derby.

Great day!

Quite a few walk-ups this year, including the piece pictured above. I thought it was cool but had no idea what to offer on it.

Thursday, after the show, Dave and I had dinner at the Brown Derby which was pretty popular among dealers. We saw Johnny Adams in there.
